Most electrical service calls are for one of a handful of problems, and a homeowner who understands what is going on can usually tell a real emergency from an annoyance, and a fair quote from a padded one. This guide walks through the common ones in the order I would check them.

Before you do, here is what you can safely check yourself and what the common problems actually are.
Safe things you can check yourself
- Reset a tripped breaker. A tripped breaker sits between on and off. Push it fully off, then back on. If it holds, something drew too much current once. If it trips again immediately, stop resetting it and read the next section.
- Test and reset GFCI outlets. The outlets with the two buttons in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. One GFCI can protect several downstream outlets, so a dead outlet in the bathroom is often a tripped GFCI in a different bathroom or the garage.
- Look for a switched outlet. A dead outlet in a living room or bedroom is sometimes controlled by a wall switch, by design.
- Check the bulb and the lamp. Obvious, and still the answer more often than anyone admits.
- Read the panel from the outside. Brand, main breaker size, the labels. Everything is visible without removing the cover. A short walkthrough is here.
Stop and call someone if you smell burning plastic, an outlet or switch is warm or discolored, a breaker trips instantly every time it is reset, you see sparks, or you get a shock from any surface. Those are not troubleshooting situations.
Breakers that keep tripping
A breaker trips for three reasons: overload, short circuit, or ground fault.
Overload is the friendly one. Too many things on one circuit, typically a space heater, a hair dryer or a microwave sharing a circuit with a lot else. The fix is moving the load or adding a circuit.
A short circuit trips the breaker instantly and hard, often with a snap. Something is letting the hot wire touch neutral or ground: a damaged cord, a failed appliance, a nail through a cable, a loose wire in a box. Unplug everything on the circuit and try once. If it still trips with nothing plugged in, the problem is in the wiring and it needs an electrician.
Arc-fault breakers, the ones with a test button in the panel, are required on most living-area circuits in newer homes and they trip on conditions a standard breaker ignores. They also have a reputation for nuisance trips from certain motors and electronics. A licensed electrician can tell you whether a repeated AFCI trip is a real arc or an incompatible appliance.
Flickering or dimming lights
One light flickering is usually a bulb, a dimmer that does not match the bulb type, or a loose connection at that fixture. Lights across the whole house dimming when the air conditioner or dryer starts is normal in small amounts. Lights across the whole house flickering with no pattern, or one half of the house dim while the other is bright, can be a loose neutral at the panel or at the utility connection, and that one is serious. It can send full voltage to circuits that expect half of it and damage everything plugged in. Call an electrician the same day. If it is on the utility side, they will bring in Duke Energy.
Warm or discolored outlets and switches
Heat at a device means resistance at a connection. The usual causes are a backstabbed connection (wires pushed into the spring holes on the back of a cheap outlet instead of under the screws), a worn-out receptacle that no longer grips a plug, or aluminum wiring meeting a device not rated for it. Any of these can progress to a fire. Replacing the device is a small job. Ignoring it is not.
Aluminum wiring in Raleigh homes
Homes built between roughly 1965 and 1973 were often wired with aluminum branch circuits because copper was expensive. The wire itself is fine. The trouble is at connections, where aluminum expands and contracts more than copper and can loosen over decades. The signs are warm cover plates, flickering, and a faint hot-plastic smell at a device.
There are accepted repair methods that do not involve rewiring the house: special connectors rated for joining aluminum to copper at every device, or devices rated for aluminum. Ask a contractor which method they use and why. A quote that jumps straight to a full rewire deserves a second opinion.
Two-prong outlets and no ground
Older Raleigh houses frequently have ungrounded two-prong outlets. Replacing them with three-prong outlets without a ground is a code violation and gives a false sense of safety. The accepted options are running a new ground, rewiring the circuit, or installing GFCI protection on the circuit and labeling the outlets "no equipment ground," which the code allows. An electrician can tell you which makes sense for your house.
Dead circuits
A circuit that is dead with the breaker on and no GFCI tripped usually has a failed connection somewhere in the chain. Circuits are wired outlet to outlet, so one bad connection kills everything after it. This is a tracing job. It is rarely expensive, but it does take someone who knows how to do it without opening every box in the house.
Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Hardwired detectors have a replacement date printed on the back, usually ten years from manufacture. When one chirps and a new battery does not fix it, the unit is at end of life. Replace all of them at once so they are interconnected properly, and match the brand so they talk to each other.
What to ask when you call
- Is there a diagnostic or trip fee, and does it apply to the repair if I go ahead?
- Will you tell me the cause before quoting the fix?
- Is the work permitted if it needs to be?
- What is the license number?
